Surgical masks
Surgical masks are the most common type of protective mask. Disposable surgical masks were designed to protect medical staff and people exposed to airborne dust and other contaminants. Their role is to create a physical barrier between the wearer’s mouth and nose and potential contaminants in the immediate environment.
Disposable surgical masks protect against droplets or particles larger than 100 micrometres. Their role is not primarily to filter air, but to protect the face from saliva droplets and aerosols released from an ill person’s mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, or during certain medical procedures.
